In the past, we have worked to develop typically high quality water supplies from both bedrock and aquifer supplies.  Within the last several years, we have added to that experience by the addition of one of the most well respected hydrogeologists in the State of Maine.  Mr. Ricky Pershken has provided the additional tools to help us assist communities in analyzing groundwater supplies for sustainable yield, analyzing individual wells for their performance efficiencies, and providing wellhead protection programs for municipalities and Districts.

We often perform geotechnical investigations for building and structure foundations. This involves testing by backhoe or drill rig, in place testing and lab tests to determine soil/bedrock characteristics. The information is used to properly design foundations that are stable and secure.

The intent of wellhead protection is simply to prevent groundwater contamination from ever reaching a water supply well. The high cost of replacing a well and treating an aquifer that has become contaminated is sufficient incentive to make every effort to prevent contamination from occurring.

The wellhead protection process involves several steps including:

  • Delineation of wellhead protection area: In order to adequately protect wells, we need to determine where the groundwater comes from.
  • Potential contamination sources inventory: Once we know where the water comes from, we can look at that area to see if there are any activities taking place that have or could contaminate the groundwater.
  • Management: The intent of management is to prevent future or existing activities from contaminating groundwater.
  • Contingency plan:  This is a plan of what to do in the event of groundwater contamination or water supply shortage.

We have completed wellhead protection plans for many communities throughout the State of Maine including the Houlton Water Company, Rumford Water District and Searsport Water District.
